Covid-19 Response by Oxfam India to support Vulnerable Families and Migrant Workers

In India, over 200,000 people are infected with the Novel Coronavirus and more than 5,700 have died. These numbers are increasing with every passing day.
 
 
 
 Oxfam India is on the ground responding with cooked meals, dry food ration, and safety kits including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in nearly 14 states.
 
 Why we need to respond
 
 
 
   The lockdown has affected migrant workers and daily wage earners the most; they are 90% of our Indian workforce in the informal sector.
 
   They depend on daily wages to meet their everyday basic requirement - food, medicines and even water. This will push them further into poverty.
 
   Lack of access to free and quality healthcare means that they do not have access to medical care if and when they are diagnosed with COVID-19.
 
   There are 4 million homeless in urban India who are at greater risk of the infection due to their living condition.
 
 
 
 How are we responding
 
 
 
   Oxfam India is working in nearly 14 states.
 
   52,355 packets of ready to eat cooked meals have been distributed to migrant labourers, construction workers and homeless people in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
 
   Over 100,000 have been supported with dry food ration in Maharashtra, Delhi, UP, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Kerala. The ration kits will last for almost a month.
 
   5,552 safety kits have been distributed in states like Maharashtra, Delhi, Gurgaon & Kerala for the frontline health workers including doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and other support staff.
 
   3,000 PPE kits for frontline workers in Bihar like ASHA, ANM, One-stop crisis centre and Police stations, and district administration offices. This was distributed through the State Health Society.
 
 
 
 5.5 million people have been reached through awareness generating messages on COVID-19 by using various innovative communication mediums such as mobile vans, miking from public places such as temples and mosques. These have been well appreciated by respective state governments.
 
 Response to Cyclone Amphan
 
 A Double Disaster: A super cyclone amidst COVID 19 situation
 
 Extremely severe cyclone Amphan directly affected more than 6,00,00000 people and destroyed more than 10,00000 houses in India, with more than 650,000 people were evacuated from their homes in West Bengal and Odisha. The West Bengal Government has pegged losses at around 1 Trillion Indian Rupees
 
 
 
 The situation of people on ground after the lockdown was already heartwrenching and the cyclone has broken the backbone completely. It will take years for many of them to recover from the shock of COVID 19 and Cyclone Amphan.
 
 
 
 The immediate impact of Amphan across the worst hit areas could be streamlined at three levels – loss to life and property, loss to basic infrastructure and the loss to livelihoods due to saline water intrusion and large-scale inundation.
 
 Initiatives taken
 
 Oxfam has already conducted a rapid need assessment with the support of local partners immediately after the floods. Contingency stock for 3500 HH prepositioned with INSS has been moved for distribution in three districts – 24 Parganas South, 24 Parganas North and East Midnapore.

A project that is working to provide education and health care to children.

Since 1998, the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) has helped more than 3,500 impoverished families in 19 isolated sub-villages to help themselves as they gradually escape the cycle of abject poverty.
 
 
 
 In 1998, these communities, scattered over 5,000 hectares of arid north and eastern slopes of Mounts Agung and Abang in east Bali, were totally isolated from the outside world with no roads, water supply, health facilities, education, sanitation or electricity – and children were the key victims! Malnutrition and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) were endemic, with iodine being the key micronutrient for brain and body development. They appealed to David Booth for help and the East Bali poverty Project was born! After interviewing 1,056 families, the most isolated communities requested education for our children so they can lead us to a better life. An inspiring and productive collaboration then began with the whole village to address key aspects of human need.
 
 
 
 Key milestones and achievements below:
 
 
 
   Educated more than 1,150 childrenin 6 EBPP schools;
 
   Road infrastructure – more than 25 kilometres built;
 
   Water supply for over 2,200 families;
 
   Health outreach services to 4,000+ children annually
 
   1,095 toilet blocks built to improve sanitation, hygiene and health
 
   80,000 bamboo seedlings planted
 
   Established bamboo Social Enterprise, to generate an income for the communities
 
 
 
 Funds are urgently needed to continue education in 2020 for 70 students in our Jatituhu and Pengalusan schools, two of the most remote hamlets in Desa Ban.
 
 
 
 At $392/child, we need $27,440 to pay for: teachers’ salaries, site transport, teaching and learning resources, vocational training, hygiene item, etc. These 70 children and their families depend on EBPP schools as government schools are too far away and no public transport.
 
 
 
 EBPP students are high achievers:
 
 
 
   Gender equality education: Girls report no further harassment and both girls and boys share tasks equally at home and at school;
 
   School dropout and early marriage: Almost eliminated thanks to our students advocacy to parents in their respective communities;
 
   University success: 2 girls enrolled, fully sponsored: one studying Law and the other accounting.

 The Philippe and Yves Scelles Fund aims to abolish prostitution and to help its victims by making known the reality of prostitution and more generally assisting any philanthropic, educational, scientific, social, humanitarian, charitable actions. The Philippe and Yves Scelles Fund has been created in 2012 by the 2 Scelles's brothers who have been managing the Scelles Foundation since its creation in 1993, following the work done by their uncle Jean Scelles since 1956 against pimps through legal proceedings with a team of attorneys. Jean and Jeanne Scelles bequeathed all of their possessions to the Scelles Foundation. The Scelles Foundation has developed a large documentation center and has organized many activities in partnership with main NGOs and other stakeholders, engaged against prostitution across France and Europe, through advocacy, conferences, books, and events. So far, 2,000 learners have benefited from our functional adult education, primary education, early childhood education, and vocational skilling activities. 8,000 patients have been treated at our health facility. 100 women who are members of our Shea butter Coop have seen their daily household incomes triple from under $1 to now $4, etc. Moreover, our interventions are successful because we actively involve the community in discussing their needs, views, and priorities while giving them the tools they need to solve their own challenges. Across and beyond Okere, the impact of our work shines bright and the international media have comprehensively covered our radical approach to rural transformation.  Okere City's initiatives are driven by actual community needs and the implementation of project activities is led by community members. Italians call Americans:  Help to rebuild Italy as after WWII Italy,  once the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Europe,  became the first European country to impose national lockdown restrictions . At the beginning of May, Italy lifted some of those restrictions but  schools, nurseries, day cares and summer camps have remained closed.  In Italy, right now there are about 10 million kids under 18 who are affected by these closures.  No one knows when formal schooling will resume, and everyone feels uncertain. The crisis we are experiencing is the biggest planetary educational crisis we can remember. It is believed that 1 billion 650 million children in the world are still out of school and blocked at home or with limited mobility.  But what will happen after this emergency in Italy and in the USA and in the World? Impact of Covid-19 on the closure of Education System in Italy -Absolute Poverty Risk:   Because of the Coronavirus, many Italians are losing their jobs.  Families don't have access to basic necessities; parents find it difficult to guarantee their children access to primary or early childhood goods (diapers, feeding bottles, wipes, condensed milk, etc.).  ISTAT data shows how 1 in 8 kids lives in Italy in absolute poverty ; that is  1.25 million children. -Educational Poverty risk : During the lockdown, the closure of the school system coupled with the closure of services for kids 0 to 6 represents a return to educational poverty. Lack of values, total marginalization from the social context, isolation, are some of the fallouts of Covid-19 related to the closure of the education system in Italy and in the world. It is not yet clear how many children and young people have dropped off school in recent months, due to the digital divide, but also and above all due to the cultural disparities which many Italian families still face today. This "educational gap" is even wider for children from families in conditions of material poverty.  If an effective response is not provided, there will be a generation of future Italian adults discriminated and abandoned, already during their childhood . -Rising unemployment among women  Many parents — and especially mothers — fear they will be forced to give up their work in order to care for their children, because, as the country slowly crawls back to life,  schools, nurseries, day cares and summer camps remain closed.  Right now, Italian families are living in a situation of great uncertainty," said  Elena Bonetti, italian's minister for equal opportunities and the family. Families needed to feel supported not only during the lockdown, but after, she added.  Strengthening IT equipment for families  Mission Bambini provided with laptops, tablets, and smartphones, to lower income families with limited IT equipment at home. The coronavirus emergency is exasperating the most critical situations of those families who have children with Special Educational Needs or foreign children with linguistic difficulties.  The expected results of this intervention is to reduce as much as possible the social and educational costs that this period of isolation is causing to children, who are at higher risk of not being able to keep up with the school curriculum, compromising their future school years. 
 
 
 Ideation of a on-line platform with the purpose of accompanying the pedagogical growth of children age 0 through 6   www.bambinipatapum.it  .   The platform provides families the tools for the educational management of children in nursery school. Inside there are tips and multimedia content for organizing various activities such as workshops and readings. There is also an online  Consultant session  which gives relief and emotional support to the most fragile or lonely parents at home, who in turn can transmit safety to children.  It's the first platform in Italy to provide this service for children in the age group 0-6.  Thanks to your donations, we could make the contents of the digital platform  also accessible in English to American children too.

 The Digital Educator:  It's an educator supporting the activities promoted within the online platform ( www.bambinipatapum.it )  The idea of online education is to give families access to workshops which are managed online by educator; support is provided to families   through different levels : 
   
 Webinars :  online sessions are scheduled in which parents and children together carry out with the educator various activities, included in the multimedia contents of the platform.  This level of activity is considered less invasive as it doesn't enter into the merits of parental management but is limited to "dealing with" and therefore accompanying the parenting skills of families less directly .    
 Weekly planning of an educational plan : from the platform every week the educators will produce a weekly plan of the activities, present in the platform, that parents can manage with their children. Through two weekly meetings, families will be able to discuss webinars, conducted by educators, on the difficulties encountered and ask for suggestions.  In addition to providing advice, this action involves a transfer of parenting skills between the educator and parents and among parents themselves. 
 
 
 Individualized online accompaniment : it is a service aimed at the most fragile families and follows the same strategy of action described above.  The educator will develop a personalized weekly educational path for the family in difficulty and will try to support it through online meetings. 
   
 Webinar for parents :  to transfer parenting skills to participants, such as relationship management, accompaniment to motor and communication development, conflict management, etc. 
 -T o  prevent rising unemployment among women   
 
 Home education:  The role of the home educator is therefore twofolds: to provide educational support to families as well as to ensure that children are well and protected. The home educator is therefore the role who will go directly to the homes of the families most at risk by supporting them in the management of children and providing them with the tools that can enable parents to accompany their children even in his absence. It will also be the catalyzer of network operators by reporting the most urgent and at risk cases to the Public Social Services. 
 
 Outdoord Education  This means being able to imagine the possibility to carry out outdoor activities with groups of children and parents respecting the required distances. In the summer months therefore during suitable weather conditionsan educator will organize outdoor activities teaching children to play safely.  This would allow mother who return to work to be able to have a place where their children are entrusted, to children to find their educators and companions and resume their educational path, to families to be able to participate and increase their parenting skills .

CAMELEON develops a holistic approach to act on the causes and effects of sexual violence towards children and teenagers. 
 
 CAMELEON  has been working in the Philippines for 24 years in order to facilitate the protection, healing and rehabilitation of young girls victim of sexual abuse (5-24 years old). 130 girls are currently protected and helped by CAMELEON : 76 of them are sheltered in our 3 centers based in Silay (Negros) and Passi City (Panay), while 54 girls continue to be guided after they left the center to go back to their families (if safe) or in welcome families accredited by social services. OUR MISSION About 7,000,000 children are sexually abused every year in the Philippines. More than 70% of sexually abused children are between 10 and 18 years old. Among those victims, 20% are under 6 years old. Cases of child sexual abuse are one of the most common issues that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has to handle after abandonment and neglect. Despite the Anti-Rape Law of 1997, rape remains the most frequent type of sexual abuse, followed by incest and fondling. CAMELEON offers general support to the young girls victim of sexual abuse (basic care, food, education, professional training) and psychological counselling to help them rebuild themselves. The families receive training in parenting to facilitate the reintegration of girls. It also provides legal assistance for the duration of the trial to the girls who wish to sue their perpetrators. The association supports its beneficiaries until the resolution of the conflict and their complete autonomy. Long-Term Impact Thanks to the project, 130 young girls victim of sexual abuse will rebuild themselves and will be resilient. They will build their future thanks to education and skills development. They will know their rights and invoke them in front of the court, which will help fight impunity. The families will change their behavior towards their daughters and promote Children's rights. The communities and local authorities will be mobilized together to prevent and deal with child abuse cases in these areas.                                                                                www.mozlibraryproject.org Vision : The AJUNTOS Moz Library Project helps illiterate youth close the achievement gap by providing access to supplemental education opportunities, learning resources, and community health knowledge, through building and managing Ile's first public library. The  Value  of Literacy: Learning how to read and write can change lives. Literacy increases employment opportunities. Literate individuals earn 64% more than their illiterate counterparts. Literacy has been linked to increasing lifespans. A child born to a mother who can read in a developing country is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5 years old. Literacy is also linked to public health. Individuals with little or no education are 2.2 times more likely to contract HIV as those who have completed primary education. Identifying the  Need  in Mozambique: According to a 2016 study, Mozambique's youth literacy rate is 68%, compared to the 90% global average. Furthermore, only 37% of the Mozambican population has a comprehensive knowledge of HIV. Increasing literacy rates has been linked to increasing HIV prevention and improving health and wellbeing. The ability to read and write can change lives. Project  History : Courtney Johnson was a Peace Corps volunteer from 2015-2017 and worked as a teacher in Ile, Mozambique. She observed that about 5% her high school students could not read or write. But it was not for lack of effort. Many of her students who were illiterate went to school every day. However, those students turned in tests with only strings of letters and consonants. Illiteracy was a topic of conversation among teachers and community members. However, there was an acute lack of resources that prevented the existing institutions from tackling this issue. In 2015, Courtney began to work with community members to develop a program that would work alongside the existing education system providing supplemental literacy education. The  Mission : The AJUNTOS Moz Library Program is run by a group of community members who are teachers and activists with the shared vision to bring a library to Ile. The library provides both instructional support and resources. Teachers trained in the literacy curriculum will offer lessons with an emphasis on interactive learning strategies. Equally as important, the library will provide resources that may be otherwise unavailable like paper, pens, and electricity to study after dark.  To accomplish the vision of the AJUNTOS Moz Library Project, the mission is threefold: 1) Design a Safe Space 
 Support construction efforts to provide a safe and secure space. 
 Establish access to electricity providing the ability to study after dark. 
 Create a hygienic space with a well for access to water and clean bathrooms. 
 2) Coordinate Library Resources 
 Provide the community with access to resources including tables, chairs, books, pencils, paper, electricity, and computers. 
 Establish a simple, replicable, and interactive literacy curriculum that serves a diversity of learning styles and individualized attention. 
 Train teachers in Curriculum Workshops and train teachers and librarians to use and maintain resources to create a sustainable program. 
 3) Inform Community Health Leverage opportunities to disseminate public health information through classes, murals, and public theater plays. About  Ile, Mozambique : The library is in Mozambique, a country which sits on the southeast coastline of Africa sharing a boarder with South Africa to the south and Tanzania to the north. Ile is a medium-small town with a population of approximately 15,000 people. Ile has 5 elementary schools, 1 high school, a soccer field, a hospital, several stores, and an open-air market. It is primarily an agricultural town with oranges, rice, and beans as the principle crops. The coordinates of the library are 16"02"15"S and 37"10"35"E. Our Mission Over the last sixty years , Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme (FMSH) has cultivated pluralistic progress by advancing collaboration across the social sciences and humanities – forging new cooperation and understanding across boundaries. Founded in 1963 by the renowned historians Fernand Braudel and Clemens Heller, from the start, the FMSH has been a transatlantic project supported by transformative American philanthropies. Since its inception, our foundation was standed out with an unique positioning on particularly innovative and "risky" research themes. We achieve this through our commitment to:

 Our Campaign Facing the decline of pluralism and democracy, we are launching a campaign to lay the foundation for global progress. Our 3-year, $5 million campaign will create tools and develop new avenues for cross-cultural work through our four program pillars: 
 
 Promoting the Freedom of Expression and Discovery  – A fellowship program targeting scholars in life-threatening contexts who need safe locations to pursue their work.   
 
 
 Accelerating Cooperation, Digital Dissemination & the Fight Against Disinformation –  Expand the use of digital tools and create platforms through cross-disciplinary and cross-border connections on topics crucial to global security and progress. 
 
 Expanding Collections to Circulate Knowledge Beyond Borders  -  Translating collections of academic works from Africa, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East, Slavic countries, and Central
Asia, and brings attention to unseen academics and other traditionnally excluded groups. 
 
 Strengthening the Capacity of NextGen Humanities & Social Sciences  Scholars  – FMSH Young Scholar Academy: Equipping junior researchers with critical skills to practice social sciences and humanities.

The American Friends of the Papageno Foundation is established to support music therapy research for children with autism in the US.  Music therapy is a well-established professional health discipline that uses music as a the therapeutic stimulus to achieve non-musical treatment and goals. When Aaltje van Zweden-van Buuren and her husband, conductor Jaap van Zweden's, child was born with autism, this had and continues to have a huge impact on the family. In 1997, the couple established the Papageno Foundation. Now, 20 years later, Papageno has made a name for itself in the Netherlands. The Foundation has developed into a multi-faceted organisation which, through all sorts of initiatives and activities, focuses on the development of children and young people with autism: 
 Music therapy:  a national network of 25 qualified music therapists, who provide therapy to children in their homes. 
 Papageno Huis: this centre offers respite and support to children with autism. For the youngsters it is a place to work, to live and to  participate in the community.  
 Research: research of music therapy on autism and into the possibilities of early diagnosis and treatment.

 students  learn that having ideas is important. That you shouldn't be afraid to express your ideas -even if they sound a bit weird or challenging in the beginning. They learn what it takes to bring an idea to life; and that you can do it by respecting each other's talents, co-create, collaborating and not giving up; 
 
	 
 teachers and professors  experience the power of project-based learning. They participate in an open education process that proves to students that what happens in a classroom can impact the -and has a link to- the real world. That's the pivotal moment they realise that MyMachine – and thus education – brings them skills they can use for life.

	 Our unique and multi-award winning methodology: 
 
	 in one school year: 
 
	 STEP 1. PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN INVENT THEIR DREAM MACHINE (IDEA) 
	 Anything goes: from a machine that helps you to put peanut butter on a sandwich, a machine to learn to make friends, to a machine to clean up the ocean. The main criterion is that it is relevant for the child-inventor who really, really wants it.
 
	 STEP 2. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DESIGN THE IDEA (CONCEPT) 
	 With the help of University Students (product designers, game design students, engineers, architect students, art students etc.), the children design the idea into a concept.
 
	 STEP 3. TECHNICAL/VOCATIONAL SECONDARY STUDENTS BUILD A WORKING PROTOTYPE: 
	With the help of the Technical/Vocational Secondary Level Students, the children build a real working prototype of those dream machines.

 Patinaai Osim is a national non-governmental organization (NGO) founded and registered in Kenya in 2010 and started it's operations in 2019. Founded by Semerian Sankori a proud Maasai woman, she grew up seeing women disadvantaged at all societal levels. From the household level where they had no say on their rights and those of their children. at national level they were barred by their spouses from electing a leader of their choice among other rights. Where as Semerian was fortunate to attend school, many girls from her community didn't and sadly, challenges still exist. Something compelled Semerian to do something about this by being a voice and speaking against this oppression and this is why Patinaai Osim was founded. Since inception, Patinaai has made tremendous achievement, contributing significantly to national efforts aimed at eliminating discriminations against women and girls. Patinaai's vision is aligned to Kenya vision 2030 which strives for a collective aspiration for a better society by the year 2030. It further aligns to Chapter Four of the Kenya Constitution which, contains a progressive Bill of Rights which strives to guarantee the protection of minorities and marginalized groups. The organization's image as an NGO is to advocate for the protection of minorities and marginalized groups especially pastoral communities.   Patinaai has programs in  Education ,  Sexual and Reproductive health rights ,  Sustainable livelihoods  and  Environment sustainability.  By the end of 2022, Patinaai had reached out to approximately 5000 persons (including 1300 women, 700 youth and 3000 children) with comprehensive sustainable positive change related services. It is estimated that Patinaai reaches close to 7000 people with information that promotes positive behavior change towards the rights of children and women, education and elimination of harmful practices. We plan to reach double these numbers by 2025. Patinaai continues to work closely with other care provider organizations in meeting the needs of the target population in recognition of benefits of partnerships.   VISION:  To have empowered and resilient children, women and youth as change-makers in the pastoral community. MISSION : Create sustainable livelihoods and empower pastoral communities to actively engage in the improvement of their social-economic status.  The Fund for Congolese Women (FFC)   supports women's grassroots organizations through financial and technical assistance.  FFC is unique - the only women-led grant-giving NGO in the entire DRC. We provide grants to local women-led organizations that are often in the most remote, difficult to reach areas.   Why? We are unshakable believers in local solutions to local issues.  We know that the brave women and girls working at the grassroots level have the solutions. We know that when women become agents of change, they benefit, their families benefit, their communities benefit. Since its inception in 2007, FFC has funded more than 386 projects throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. We support projects focusing on eliminating sexual violence against women, delivering empowerment programs for women and girls, educating women about HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, and advocating for environmental justice and access to resources and land for women.
