Delivering cash to families impacted by COVID-19 in the US and to poor households in Africa via secure mobile transfers.

Starting by targeting vulnerable households enrolled in SNAP, living in the areas hardest hit by COVID-19. Each household will receive $1k, and we expect the main constraint on how many we can reach will be how much we can raise.

We also plan to respond internationally, and are finalizing those details.

We’re doing this because we believe …
1. Cash is the right instrument.
You won’t be surprised to hear that from us, but to recap a decade of evidence and experience: it is fast, efficient, effective, and can have multiplier effects on the economy.

2. The government response will likely not be enough.
We’re glad that the government is considering direct cash payments, but even if it does as we hope, we expect there will be delays and not enough money fast enough to the most vulnerable.

3. We can execute well.
We’ve been giving cash since 2008, and have delivered over $150M to poor people in situations as diverse as Liberia, DRC during Ebola, urban Nairobi, and Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. When we’ve responded selectively to US crises in the past, we’ve seen positive results both in terms of immediate impact and longer-term interest in giving internationally.

Respond to the needs of the most vulnerable in Southern Africa amidst the spread of Coronavirus 
 
 The world has never faced a pandemic with the potential to reach us all at the same time. While case counts vary, it's clear that Coronavirus is spreading across every country and territory.  Amongst the myriad global communities whose lives and livelihoods have already been affected, are 88 million vulnerable people in southern Africa that are, by social and economic circumstance, at greater risk of suffering from the implications of the virus.  At the heart of the responses to Coronavirus, we must care for those living at the margins of economic and political systems to follow the measures required to flatten the curve, curb the spread and begin the journey to healing. The Southern Africa Trust's work with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and social movements across 16 countries to support their immediate needs, while simultaneously mobilizing their voices to influence the response strategies that various governments are putting in place. We focus on  women in rural areas ,  ex-miners ,  informal and cross border traders ,  domestic workers ,  small scale farmers ,  migrant workers and refugees . Vulnerable communities urgently need fact-based guidelines, practical solutions, as well as linguistically and culturally contextualised information in order to ensure prevention, detection and protection from Coronavirus. The Trust is calling on philanthropic foundations, development agencies and corporates to answer the call of the vulnerable and the CSOs that serve them by giving responsive funding, financing and other resource donations. It is believed that 1 billion 650 million children in the world are still out of school and blocked at home or with limited mobility.  But what will happen after this emergency in Italy and in the USA and in the World? Impact of Covid-19 on the closure of Education System in Italy -Absolute Poverty Risk:   Because of the Coronavirus, many Italians are losing their jobs.  Families don't have access to basic necessities; parents find it difficult to guarantee their children access to primary or early childhood goods (diapers, feeding bottles, wipes, condensed milk, etc.).  ISTAT data shows how 1 in 8 kids lives in Italy in absolute poverty ; that is  1.25 million children. -Educational Poverty risk : During the lockdown, the closure of the school system coupled with the closure of services for kids 0 to 6 represents a return to educational poverty. Lack of values, total marginalization from the social context, isolation, are some of the fallouts of Covid-19 related to the closure of the education system in Italy and in the world. It is not yet clear how many children and young people have dropped off school in recent months, due to the digital divide, but also and above all due to the cultural disparities which many Italian families still face today. This "educational gap" is even wider for children from families in conditions of material poverty.  If an effective response is not provided, there will be a generation of future Italian adults discriminated and abandoned, already during their childhood . -Rising unemployment among women  Many parents — and especially mothers — fear they will be forced to give up their work in order to care for their children, because, as the country slowly crawls back to life,  schools, nurseries, day cares and summer camps remain closed.  Strengthening IT equipment for families  Mission Bambini provided with laptops, tablets, and smartphones, to lower income families with limited IT equipment at home. The coronavirus emergency is exasperating the most critical situations of those families who have children with Special Educational Needs or foreign children with linguistic difficulties.  The expected results of this intervention is to reduce as much as possible the social and educational costs that this period of isolation is causing to children, who are at higher risk of not being able to keep up with the school curriculum, compromising their future school years. 
 
 
 Ideation of a on-line platform with the purpose of accompanying the pedagogical growth of children age 0 through 6   www.bambinipatapum.it  .   The platform provides families the tools for the educational management of children in nursery school. Inside there are tips and multimedia content for organizing various activities such as workshops and readings. There is also an online  Consultant session  which gives relief and emotional support to the most fragile or lonely parents at home, who in turn can transmit safety to children.  It's the first platform in Italy to provide this service for children in the age group 0-6.  Thanks to your donations, we could make the contents of the digital platform  also accessible in English to American children too.

 The Digital Educator:  It's an educator supporting the activities promoted within the online platform ( www.bambinipatapum.it )  The idea of online education is to give families access to workshops which are managed online by educator; support is provided to families   through different levels : 
   
 Webinars :  online sessions are scheduled in which parents and children together carry out with the educator various activities, included in the multimedia contents of the platform.  This level of activity is considered less invasive as it doesn't enter into the merits of parental management but is limited to "dealing with" and therefore accompanying the parenting skills of families less directly .    
 Weekly planning of an educational plan : from the platform every week the educators will produce a weekly plan of the activities, present in the platform, that parents can manage with their children. Through two weekly meetings, families will be able to discuss webinars, conducted by educators, on the difficulties encountered and ask for suggestions.  In addition to providing advice, this action involves a transfer of parenting skills between the educator and parents and among parents themselves. 
 
 
 Individualized online accompaniment : it is a service aimed at the most fragile families and follows the same strategy of action described above.  The educator will develop a personalized weekly educational path for the family in difficulty and will try to support it through online meetings. 
   
 Webinar for parents :  to transfer parenting skills to participants, such as relationship management, accompaniment to motor and communication development, conflict management, etc.

 Home education:  The role of the home educator is therefore twofolds: to provide educational support to families as well as to ensure that children are well and protected. The home educator is therefore the role who will go directly to the homes of the families most at risk by supporting them in the management of children and providing them with the tools that can enable parents to accompany their children even in his absence. It will also be the catalyzer of network operators by reporting the most urgent and at risk cases to the Public Social Services. 
 
 Outdoord Education  This means being able to imagine the possibility to carry out outdoor activities with groups of children and parents respecting the required distances. In the summer months therefore during suitable weather conditionsan educator will organize outdoor activities teaching children to play safely.  This would allow mother who return to work to be able to have a place where their children are entrusted, to children to find their educators and companions and resume their educational path, to families to be able to participate and increase their parenting skills .

PEN's Response to COVID-19: Digital STEM Teaching in Ghana Amidst the Pandemic

Because KBFUS is a public charity, within the meaning of Sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) of the IRC, donors may claim the maximum tax benefits allowed by U.S. tax law for their contributions to this Practical Education Network US Fund. The Challenge: The COVID-19 pandemic has upended children's lives in unprecedented ways. Hundreds of millions of children are spending months away from their classrooms, and for the majority of students in West Africa, no school means no learning. According to UNICEF, the longer that children (especially the vulnerable ones) stay away from school, the less likely they are to return. It is critical to provide students alternative ways to learn and rebuild their routine.  After recording the first two cases of COVID-19 in March, the Government of Ghana closed all schools. We project that late 2020/early 2021 is when schools will re-open and be fully operational again.  An estimated 5-8 million Ghanaian students are completely devoid of structured learning opportunities. The existing gaps in quality education between West Africa and the developed world are being exacerbated through this crisis and threaten to have ripple effects on the region's ability to develop in years to come.  Our Response: PEN is raising $229,000 in emergency funding to roll out a suite of digital STEM educational content for students and teachers in Ghana.  We are leveraging an extensive set of curriculum-aligned, practical STEM activities (1,000+) and a strong network of teachers (3,000+) to rapidly translate existing content and deploy at scale. This will not only ensure that learning continues, but it will restore hope for students and purpose for teachers, whilst enabling the government to concentrate on COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Once schools re-open, these activities will be blended with PEN's existing in-person work, so as to employ improved modes of disseminating STEM education across the continent. 1. Bringing STEM to Homes  through radio, videos, animations, graphical instructions, and booklets to enable students to cover the sequence of science content that they would have been covering in school, and in a hands-on manner. All PEN content leverages simple materials, including those that can be found in a typical Ghanaian home. We also include tips for parents to support their children and engage with them in carrying out the activities; 2. Bringing STEM to Teachers   through online training via Zoom. Our network of 3,000+ teachers is on standby, eager to receive ideas for how they can continue reaching their students with hands-on STEM content. They will be trained in digital literacy and given templates for engaging their students on various channels (WhatsApp, radio, etc. depending on location); 3. Simplifying STEM  through PEN's Resource Manuals, which contain thousands of hands-on activities using local materials and which are aligned to the national curriculum.  About Practical Education Network:  Practical Education Network (PEN) equips West African STEM teachers to employ inquiry-based pedagogies in their classrooms, utilizing locally available materials. PEN has developed thousands of hands-on STEM activities that leverage low-cost and readily available materials. These were designed with Ghanaian teachers, and we are now working towards sharing these widely with teachers and parents globally, as they seek meaningful modes of engaging students while stuck at home during the COVID-19 crisis. PEN was born at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while the founder was pursuing her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.  Since 2014, we have trained 3,000+ STEM teachers on our practical pedagogical approach to STEM, impacted over 590,000 students and equipped 100 teachers to attain the status of PEN Trainer. This is accomplished through our holistic teacher training program, where teachers learn, design, and share MIT-style, hands-on activities. The activities are fully aligned to the national curricula and created from low-cost, locally available materials. PEN's Impact PEN's activities have been recognized globally, and achieved successes locally. Notably is the call from educational policy makers in Ghana for PEN to participate in the revision of national curriculum for basic schools. Spearheaded by National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), PEN infused portions of its hands-on content into Ghana's new primary and junior high school national science curricula.  A controlled study conducted to ascertain the impact of PEN's approach to STEM on students and teachers in the Ghanaian Junior High School classroom by Michigan Technological University in the 2017/2018 academic year revealed that our approach had a beneficial impact on students' classroom environment, attitudes towards science, and improved outcomes in standardized test scores. Teachers trained through the study were found to be very comfortable with setup of materials and confident in offering hands-on delivery using our method. Comparing outcomes between the experimental and control schools' performance on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), pupils whose teachers had PEN's hands-on STEM training increased their performance by 28.78%, which is a 97% higher improvement than those who had no PEN training (14.6%). Protecting the most vulnerable on the front line of humanitarian emergencies 

INTERSOS is a humanitarian organization on the front line to help victims of war, violence and natural disasters. 
 
	 We guarantee access to medical care, clean water and proper sanitation; we respond to basic needs, such as food and shelter; we identify and treat cases of malnutrition; we protect and assist victims of violence; we support children and, in particular, unaccompanied and separated children, building educational spaces and places for socialization in war zones. 
 LAST UPDATE: EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY AND SYRIA In the night between February 5th and February 6th, 2023, a catastrophic earthquake hit Southern-East Turkey and Northern Syria, with the epicenter close to the city of Gaziantep in Turkey. The magnitude was estimated as 7,8 and the earthquake was felt in several Middle Eastern countries including Iraq and Lebanon.  Humanitarian actors are mobilized for the response, which now focuses on search and rescue and medical interventions and treatment of the injured people. INTERSOS immediately activated its emergency teams in Syria to support the first response. One medical unit has been already deployed in operate in Ein Elkorum, Northwestern Hama, and one Mobile Medical team in Hamadaniyeh, near Khan Cheikhoun, in the Governorate of Idlib. 
	 UKRAINE EMERGENCY 
 
	It has been more than six months since the war in Ukraine broke out. As a result of this conflict, more than 4 million people are refugees in other countries and more than 6 million people are displaced within Ukraine. With expectations of this conflict carrying on for the long-term, there are strong concerns for the upcoming winter months and the additional threats posed as a result.
 As humanitarians, we are deeply concerned by the impact of the conflict on the civilian population. Civilian lives must be protected and safeguarded at all times, in line with International Humanitarian Law. 
	 Our main area of intervention inside the country is currently located in central and eastern Ukraine , with our bases of operations in Vinnytsia, Poltava, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, as well as in the southern port of Odessa.
 50% of the population in the east of the country is experiencing food insecurity and has limited access to clean and potable water. For this reason  we are distributing emergency, food and hygiene kit s to the population. When necessary, we also took care of rehabilitating securing IDPs shelters. In all areas of intervention, through our  mobile social and health teams,  we ensure access to basic medical care, with the identification and referral of the most critical cases, as well as the constant implementation of protection monitoring activities (i.e. monitoring and verification of the violation of rights, which allows us to assist those who have been exposed to psychological or physical harm and to prevent further risk of exposure to these violations). Particularly vulnerable cases are referred to specialized services, such as psychological first aid or legal assistance.  Afghanistan: on the frontline to provide critical health services 
		The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is worsening. Sanctions and the blocking of international funds have not only brought the local economy to its knees but have affected every aspect of the population's life, with very serious impacts on basic services, such as health. Food and basic commodity prices have skyrocketed, many have lost their jobs. After decades of conflict, Afghanistan was already, well before August 2021, one of the poorest countries in the world and is now even more vulnerable. Half the population lives in conditions of severe food insecurity, which for more than 14 million has already reached emergency levels. Rates of maternal and child malnutrition are very high. The country is experiencing the consequences of a period of extraordinary drought that, together with the conflict, has left the population without food. In these days temperatures are dropping below zero, marking the beginning of the most difficult and potentially catastrophic months. 
 
	INTERSOS has been operating in Afghanistan since 2001.  Our projects in the country are concentrated in the provinces of Kabul, Kandahar and Zabul, in areas where the conflict was particularly acute . In these parts of the country we support several primary health centres in the districts of Surobi, Shakardara, Ehsabz, Bagrami, Spin Boldak, Maywand, Shawalikot and Zheray as well as to Qalat hospital and Kharwaryan and Shajoy health centres in Zabul province. Additionally, we manage two  First Aid Trauma Points  (FATPs), which are specialised health facilities, open 24 hours a day, providing life-saving assistance.  We also deal with the  therapeutic treatment of severe acute malnutrition  for children aged 6-59 months, as part of the Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP), and continuous screening to identify cases of malnutrition. Having  a dedicated midwife in each of our health centres , we also provide counselling, vaccinations and routine treatment; we refer HIV suspected cases for advice and further tests to the regional hospital of Kandahar; we guarantee safe births and provide health care to mothers and babies through ante-natal and postnatal visits; and we distribute kits for newborns.  We currently run 12 health clinics, consisting of a doctor, a midwife, a hygiene promoter and two nurses. Our medical teams perform rapid diagnostic tests for specific diseases such as malaria and syphilis, provide ante- and post-natal care, and transfer women with complicated pregnancies to secondary health care facilities. In these clinics, we also have a protection team, providing support to at-risk women, children, and people with disabilities – as well as two child friendly spaces where children can play and also learn the basics of education.

The purpose of  Joliet Youth for Malawi:   Access Brings Change , a  donor-advised fund  at KBFUS, is to enhance the lives of people in Malawi, Africa. Partnering with Mary Mudron, our purpose is to bring access to water by creating borehole wells for hundreds of people in rural Malawi, Africa.  Through our friends, Fr. Elizeo Nthalika and Fr. Benedict Zele, we have identified two villages where our help is strongly needed.  Our goal is to start with the Chisawani and Chazemba villages and then move forward with others to provide essential positive changes in the lives of many. Currently, multiple villages with over 600 families share one borehole well.  Hundreds of people travel several hours and many miles to obtain water for their daily necessities.  Sadly, on many days, after walking this long distance these individuals find the well is dry with no available water.   Since 2017 our organization has raised funds to assist with providing clothing, electricity, water supply, books, and with the building of a school.  Currently, our focus is set on creating these two wells in the Chisawani and Chazemba villages which will each cost $5,000. All proceeds will go directly toward the needs of Malawi, Africa. In 2017, Daily Maverick founded Scorpio, a dedicated investigative journalism unit. Scorpio's first major investigation was the #GuptaLeaks, the reporting of which started in June of 2017. In early 2018 Inkululeko became registered as a Public Benefit Organization with SARS. Inkululeko's founding objectives are to: 1. Promote an open, accountable and just democracy, and 2. Promote access to media and a free press Over the last year, our total audience has effectively grown by more than 80%. We now reach 8,1 million monthly unique visitors (July 2022), compared to 4.3 million in the previous year July 2021, and we aim to increase this number by continuing to provide factual, accurate, and fearless quality content in line with our vision for our audiences to know more and to know better. Creating second chances for formerly imprisoned women, their children  and girls in the Juvenile Justice System 
 
 Clean Start is a social enterprise registered in 2015 in Kenya.  Clean Start is the only women-led organization in Kenya with 50 % of the staff being formerly imprisoned and supporting their fellow imprisoned women to get out of the trenches and get back on their feet post imprisonment.  Our vision is to Re-imagine futures and Re-claim destinies.  Our mission-Clean Start works with women and Children Impacted by the Criminal Justice System to restore their dignity and hope for a successful re-integration. Our strategic objectives 
 
 Catalyze movement building on issues about the incarceration of women 
 
 Contribute to effecting systemic change within the Criminal Justice System  
 Service delivery to restore dignity, and hope and facilitate successful reintegration. 
 Our target groups Imprisoned women, formerly imprisoned women, girls in the juvenile justice system, and children of imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women. Our interventions We offer pre-and post-release programs that support women and their children and girls as they return to their communities from prison, we provide them with psycho-social support and livelihood opportunities. We also advocate for systemic change within the Criminal Justice System. Our work begins inside prison, in the last 5 years, with our friends and partners, our outreach programs in and out of prison have impacted 4000 women by providing them with dignity packs and attitudinal and behavioural change training. The dignity packs have provided the dignity, respect, and self-esteem the women need. We are bridging the gap between prison and the community and ensuring we avoid the gaping trench in-between while putting the formerly imprisoned woman at the core of the strategic framework, program design, development, and implementation with progressive touch points with her children, family, and community. Clean Start supports successful reintegration and transition for women through  employment training, psycho-social support, entrepreneurship, and vocational training, enabling them to find sustainable livelihoods post-release.  We are a bridge for women leaving prison over stigma, isolation, pain and outrage, abandonment, depression, illness, and lack of economic and educational opportunities. We amplify the stories of resilience, hope, and change for formerly imprisoned women to support policy change and prison reforms.  The Donors' Association The DSZ – International Giving Foundation was founded by the German Donors' Association for the Promotion of Humanities and Sciences in Germany. The Donors' Association was established as joint initiative of the German economy in 1920 and advocates sustainable improvement of education, science and research in Germany. It is simultaneously sponsor of the donation system and trustee of charitable foundations. The Deutsches Stiftungszentrum (German Foundation Centre)is the service centre of the Donors' Association for benefactors and foundations. More and more private persons and companies are taking on commitments in coalescent Europe and across the world. But well-intended help frequently fails to overcome bureaucratic hurdles. For example, German tax legislature denies donation deductions to organisations outside of Europe. Donations are theoretically deductible within the EU but in reality, this can generally only be achieved with excessive expenditures for donor and recipient. The DSZ – International Giving Foundation is recognized as a tax-privileged organisation. It pursues all purposes recognized in Germany as charitable and benevolent. The DSZ – International Giving Foundation supports the international project specified by the donor and takes care of the complete administrative process.
