Global sustainability goals and plastic soup In September 2015, the United Nations determined the  2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . This agenda comprises the seventeen well-known  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All Member States have an effort obligation to adjust their policies so that these goals will indeed be achieved in 2030. Many organizations and companies have now also embraced the agenda and use the sustainability goals as a guide for their actions. None of the seventeen SDGs specifically has plastic soup as its main subject. Meanwhile, the effects of the plastic soup are clearer and clearer and the problem is increasingly prominent on the international agenda. In July 2017, the United Nations met on the implementation of SDG 14, ("Preserve and make sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources"), and the world adopted a  resolution : "Our Ocean, our future: call for action". All countries agreed to intensify their efforts to prevent pollution of the oceans, among others by aiming to reduce plastics and microplastics. The Greenland Trees mission is  to drawdown atmospheric CO2 into new forests; to partner with Greenlandic society, emphasising youth engagement and education; to restore the landscape in a heavily degraded former military base and other urbanised environments; to increase bird habitat and soil carbon; and to support forest research. Greenland Trees partnership with the King Baudouin Foundation US enables US 501c3 tax deductions. Greenland trees is also affiliated with the Dasht foundation, a public benefit (ANBI) organisation registered in The Netherlands,  aiming to alleviate environmental and socio-economic issues around the globe. The Greenland Trees project was formally initiated in January 2019, but in practice started with a photographic survey in 2013 and tree plantings in 2015, 2016 and 2018, covering under 2 Ha in Narsarsuaq, south Greenland. The future of Greenland Trees involves increasing partnership with Greenlandic schools, museums and tourism, supporting forest research, and scaling up of planting activities to reach 100 Ha by 2030.

 The Philippines is a global biodiversity conservation hotspot, challenged by endemic child malnutrition. Daluhay works community-based (CB) to consider Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) prioritization through a biocultural lens. Inclusive community engagement facilitates ecohealth advances to balance ecocentric and anthropocentric values. Programs across large ecosystems, link settlements and local governments to optimize collaboration for sustainable development. Daluhay is dedicated to long-term ocean sustainability and deeply respects that CB food security determines conservation efforts across marine, agricultural and forest ecosystems. Working with artisanal fisherfolk, small-scale farmers and Indigenous Ancestral Domain Forest Guardians, Daluhay is building management models across two large ecosystems; the Northern Philippine Sea Bioregion and the Sierra Madre Biodiversity Corridor (SMBC). With over 90% of Philippine forests gone, the SMBC holds almost half of the remaining intact forest landscape. GIS-based management zone planning is in partnership with Indigenous settlements that own over 70% of Aurora Province and most of the intact forest landscape.
 
 
 
 Founded upon synergistic designs within United Nations projects, Daluhay is extending its sphere of influence to include international supports and actions to conserve the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), largest and most endangered eagle in the world; in part by taking a global leadership role in promoting Indigenous People as partners in raptor conservation. Daluhay supports sustainable energy and is directly engaged in all the other 16 SDGs. Daluhay prioritizes life, e.g. mitigating maternal fisher protein intake &lt;20% of recommended. Daluhay is a national leader in the development of fisheries CRM curriculum and training regulations. The program includes internationally recognized Social Artistry as a local engagement strategy, called Siningbayan or nation building in English. Comprehensive piloting of curriculum and related Action Research on CRM-Singingbayan is expected to be a growing area of expertise, based upon the success of positive change for sustainability. Ridge to Reef biodiversity conservation links the different ecosystems that support the communities and determine food security. Program development that is ecosystem centered and community-based is an approach to sustainable development that promotes collaboration, founded upon the principle of valuing the flow of life.

 Youth empowerment and knowledge building is their key solutions to solve the invisible threat of air pollution. CAN facilitates various engaging programs and air monitoring activities in a holistic approach to strengthen the environmental health literacy on air pollution among the public.
 
 
 
 Cleaning air is an urgent matter. The University of Hong Kong’s Hedley Environmental Index estimates the air pollution in Hong Kong caused an additional 130,000 hospital bed days, 2.3 million doctor visits, 1700 premature deaths, and HK$21 billion in economic losses in 2019. Everyone understands the illness and casualties associated with pollution are preventable. To resolve this health crisis, bold and prompt action is needed.

At the same time monuments outside the country's borders have also been saved from demolition, decay and abandonment, such as the campanile of San Giorgio dei Greci ("St. George of the Greeks") in Venice, the Church of St. Panteleimon or Kizil Kilise (Red Church) in Cappadocia, and the frescoes of the Medieval Refectory in the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine at Mount Sinai.  Omigbefite is a non-profit community education and economic development society founded in 2005 in Loropeni, Burkina Faso currently seeking funds for drilled well construction to improve community access to clean water. Initially organized in 2005 as a community charity working to feed and educate orphan children, Omigbefite has expanded it's scope over the years to become a more general non-profit social and economic development society with education projects on Ebola and the toxicity of cyanide and mercury and projects in animal husbandry, gardening, mango cultivation and most recently the construction of wells and water distribution systems.  Omigbefite means: to help a brother in despair in the language of the Lopi people.  The organization plans to focus its efforts in the next few years on the construction of drilled wells and water systems in a region that receives adequate rainfall in the rainy season but suffers very limited access to clean water in the dry season. These drilled wells will provide improved water quality throughout the year.

 The Alexander von Humboldt Biological Research Institute is the National Biodiversity Institute of Colombia. The Institute boasts a remarkable staff of 337 people, who are responsible for conducting basic and applied research on the national flora and fauna and for compiling and shaping the scientific inventory of biodiversity. Throughout our 26 years of existence, the Institute has become a world-class biodiversity institute that plays a leading role at the science-policy-society interface, mobilizing data, information, knowledge and narratives.  The social appropriation of knowledge plays a key role in pushing changes and transitions to a greener Colombian society. and so, communication, education and public awareness become strategic tools for a society that looks for tackling both biodiversity loss and the climate crisis and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Museographic exhibitions on biodiversity in Colombia are scarce due to the lack of scientific knowledge transformed into communication narratives and massive content, lack of adequate spaces and financing. In this sense, the Institute is aming at establish a museum of natural history and biological collections in the Chapel of the Cloister of San Agustín in Villa de Leyva, Boyacá. The Humboldt Institute has the knowledge of almost 30 years of research on biodiversity; It also manages the Chapel of the Cloister of San Agustín, a colonial building from the 16th century that can be perfectly adapted for a museum exhibition, and can take advantage of the tourism of Villa de Leyva. Villa de Leyva is a town in the Department of Boyacá considered an unparalleled place for national and international tourism, attracting more than 500,000 visitors per year. It is a "Heritage Town of Colombia", as it conserves a very well-restored 16th-century Spanish architecture style. According to the Tourism Monitoring Center of Boyacá, Villa de Leyva concentrates 25% of the total number of visitors to Boyacá, 78% of them 'visiting museums' as their main activity.  Summary  APOPO is a Belgian NGO that has developed an innovative system deploying African giant pouched rats (nicknamed HeroRATs) to detect landmines or tuberculosis, using their extraordinary sense of smell. APOPO's scent detection technology has a massive potential to relieve human suffering and promote development when deployed in TB and landmine response, as well as in currently unexplored fields. APOPO has programs in Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola and Cambodia. Challenge   Landmines injure or kill innocent civilians every day and pose a structural barrier to development, long after war ends. Trained HeroRATs can quickly and accurately detect landmines, thereby significantly speeding up the demining process. Meanwhile, there are about 9 million new cases of TB per year of which 3 million cases are not diagnosed. APOPO's HeroRATs can sniff out TB in human sputum samples, helping APOPO to raise the number of TB positive patients found by over 45% in partner clinics.   Solution   Detection rats offer an efficient and accurate alternative to combat 2 global humanitarian detection challenges. APOPO uses a readily available resource, and involves and employs local communities in the solution - thereby helping to initiate development and create positive social change. Our TB detection rats are at least as accurate as conventional routine microscopy, but up to 20 times faster. The Mine-Detection rats can search 200m2 in 1 hour, with a metal detector this would take 2-4 days.   Long-Term Impact   By creating local employment and encouraging development, APOPO provides a cost-effective solution to global humanitarian challenges. The work of our trained rats reduces landmine casualties, and enables communities to utilize their land for agricultural purposes or infrastructure development. Also, fast, effective TB diagnosis means patients can access treatment sooner, reducing the spread of the deadly virus and limiting the impact on the patient's family and the wider community.  Founded in 2008, The Ju/'hoansi Development Fund in Namibia is committed to improving access to quality, mother-tongue, culturally-sensitive primary education for San children by improving school facilities, training teachers, and developing educational materials. From the beginning, the JDF focused on individuals and groups of children to provide them with basic school supplies and assist with supplementary food. Soon the need for well-trained and qualified teachers became an additional focus and the JDF began supporting local teachers to improve their skills and attend the Teacher Training College. Since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in 2018, we have been able to reach many more learners with support, and to help 10 teachers to reach their final year of studies towards a diploma in Education. We have also just completed construction of the first Village School and it opened to children and the teachers in January of 2022. Two school gardens have been established and the newly trained caretakers are already harvesting vegetables with the children alongside them learning all the way.  Our long term plans are to complete our mission of improving access to quality, mother-tongue, culturally sensitive education by completing all of the 5 total schools. The JDF also recognizes that our current scope of support to Early Childhood Education in Grades 1 to 3 does not fully address the needs for a holistic solution to this historical problem. We are already engaged in the strategic planning necessary to expand into pre-primary, upper primary and secondary school support to leverage the knowledge and influence we have gained in working with all our stakeholders.  We work closely with the Kogi people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia   (" the heart of the world")  to support them and magnify their voice, especially with regard to sustainability, land management and the protection and defense of their ancestral territory . History The Kogi are isolated survivors of a pre-Colombian civilization and guardians of its memory.  Committed to maintain the balance of the universe through traditional management of their ancestral land, they withdrew as far as possible from contact with colonizers in the 17th century and continue their culture and their work. In 1990, having concluded that the non-indigenous exploitation of nature had become an existential threat, they accepted an invitation of documentary maker Alan Ereira to speak in a feature-length BBC film which had considerable impact. It was called "From the Heart of the World; The Elder Brothers' Warning".  Ereira then established the  Tairona Heritage Trust  in the UK to help them continue their work and provide a mechanism for international support.  They made a further film together, called "Aluna". The "Munekan Masha: Reviving Water in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta" Project The Trust works with the Kogis' representative body, the  Organisación Gonawindua Tayrona , and is now engaged with them on "Munekan Masha: Reviving Water in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta" project.   Adopted by the new  UNESCO BRIDGES  sustainability science coalition, this ground-breaking initiative is bringing together non-indigenous mainstream scientists and the Kogi spiritual leaders ("Mamas") in demonstrating their own undocumented methods of restoring and regenerating land. Indigenous knowledge-systems will be clearly explained and demonstrated at a carefully selected location on the north face of the Sierra. Why you should donate The Kogi, following the Mamas' spiritual consultations with the land, have selected specific parcels of ancestral land that have been continuously degraded and mismanaged due to cattle farming and unsustainable agriculture methods. Unfortunately, these ancestral lands do not belong to the Kogi anymore. In order to be able to restore and revive the land, reviving its water flow and its biodiversity by respecting it and by using their indigenous knowledge of the mountain, they need to buy back their ancestral lands. The Kogi strongly believe that if we do not learn from them, we are creating a catastrophe. They will be teaching non-indigenous environmental scientists their ways and sustainable practices that stem from true respect and insight of the earth as a living and breathing being. With  narratives advanced  and  realities improved , African women can make an important contribution to tackling the rising challenges of AI, climate change, and global inequality.  KEY INITIATIVES AWB focuses on six key areas of inspiring tangible change. We welcome our partners to join us as champions of these initiatives, by placing African women and girls at the helm of their future through Africa-focused, strategic development programs that include African women from the continent and throughout the diaspora. 
 Women in Leadership:  When it comes to good governance practices both in politics and in the C-suite, gender diversity at the top enhances overall financial performance, innovation and general stability. At AWB, we are creating leadership pipelines for governance in political spaces and on corporate boards to generate better decision-making teams. The inclusion of women and girls at decision-making tables is a crucial indicator of the freedom of the people in society, and a shift towards true liberty for all cannot be achieved without a concerted effort to bring them on board. 
 FLI – Financial Literacy and Inclusion (FLI):  We want our girls (and our women) to be able to make informed and effective decisions around the finances available to them, as well as the capital that they aspire to have in the future. As the world struggles to ensure that basic needs are met for African women and girls, AWB is thinking ahead to the importance of building out mechanisms to activate and sustain African female wealth. Gender-conscious practices are not only sound economically, but truly an operational necessity in order to guarantee global growth and development for all of society down the line. 
 Girls in STEM:  When it comes to the basics of IT and innovation-based education, AWB is focused on young women and girls. Starting with the youth safeguards our future as it fuels our leadership and talent pools. We're certain that improved workplaces of a new Africa depend on the attention we give to our girls now. This work is manifold because as we arm our young females with these marketable skills, we are also showing them and their male and female counterparts, both elder and younger, that the tech and innovation space is a platform that they can use to build out their agency and creativity as human beings. 
 The Arts:  Historically, African women have been pigeonholed into negative stereotypes and damaging caricatures. Given the nature of this misrepresentation and underexposure, we are committed to enabling the promotion of positive imagery of African women and girls while also championing and amplifying their voices on the world stage. Using fashion, the arts and celebrity, AWB aims to inspire global conversations around more accurate – and interesting - African women's narratives. 
 Sports:  This is an area that often gets overlooked in favour of others, when we think about the pursuit of global equality. However, sport and general well-being can be key assets in disrupting traditional narratives about what it means to be feminine or masculine in society as a whole. Tackling hegemonic norms within the global patriarchy can start with creating organised spaces for our girls to recreationally exercise. AWB is committed to bringing this invaluable instrument to African girls and young women and allowing them the opportunity to run with it. 
 Clean Energy:  As the world debates the verity of destructive changes to the environment, we at AWB know that Africa cannot afford to not take global warming seriously. AWB demands that Africa, as a formidable mass, be a comparable giant in global discussions on the environment. Our advantage lies in our women. African women and girls are a conduit to accessing urban and remote communities and instituting sustainable practices that protect and preserve the environment for generations to come.  The Fund for Congolese Women (FFC)   supports women's grassroots organizations through financial and technical assistance.  FFC is unique - the only women-led grant-giving NGO in the entire DRC. We provide grants to local women-led organizations that are often in the most remote, difficult to reach areas.   Why? We are unshakable believers in local solutions to local issues.  We know that the brave women and girls working at the grassroots level have the solutions. Since its inception in 2007, FFC has funded more than 386 projects throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Patinaai Osim is a national non-governmental organization (NGO) founded and registered in Kenya in 2010 and started it's operations in 2019. Founded by Semerian Sankori a proud Maasai woman, she grew up seeing women disadvantaged at all societal levels. From the household level where they had no say on their rights and those of their children. at national level they were barred by their spouses from electing a leader of their choice among other rights. Where as Semerian was fortunate to attend school, many girls from her community didn't and sadly, challenges still exist. Something compelled Semerian to do something about this by being a voice and speaking against this oppression and this is why Patinaai Osim was founded. Since inception, Patinaai has made tremendous achievement, contributing significantly to national efforts aimed at eliminating discriminations against women and girls. Patinaai's vision is aligned to Kenya vision 2030 which strives for a collective aspiration for a better society by the year 2030. It further aligns to Chapter Four of the Kenya Constitution which, contains a progressive Bill of Rights which strives to guarantee the protection of minorities and marginalized groups. The organization's image as an NGO is to advocate for the protection of minorities and marginalized groups especially pastoral communities.   Patinaai has programs in  Education ,  Sexual and Reproductive health rights ,  Sustainable livelihoods  and  Environment sustainability.  By the end of 2022, Patinaai had reached out to approximately 5000 persons (including 1300 women, 700 youth and 3000 children) with comprehensive sustainable positive change related services. It is estimated that Patinaai reaches close to 7000 people with information that promotes positive behavior change towards the rights of children and women, education and elimination of harmful practices. We plan to reach double these numbers by 2025. Patinaai continues to work closely with other care provider organizations in meeting the needs of the target population in recognition of benefits of partnerships.  ABOUT US Ewang'an Nadede Advocacy Initiative (ENAI - Africa) is a community-based organization serving more than 3500 people living in Indigenous pastoral communities in Kajiado County, a remote rural region of the south rift in Kenya.  ENAI was established by Maasai community member Dr. Lanoi Parmuat to advocate for, protect, enlighten and empower Indigenous women and girls, 78% of whom the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage remains a sad reality.  Today our programs have grown to include: Education and Health Services * Anti-FGM Advocacy and Response * Food Security, Nutrition, and Livelihood Support * Natural Resource Management and Governance OUR URGENT NEED: WATER Kenya is currently facing its worst drought in 40 years.  The drought has wiped out crops, livestock, and deepened a growing hunger crisis. Acute malnutrition in children under 5 is prevalent and recent outbreaks of cholera have been reported due to lack of access to clean water. Currently, the community that ENAI supports has only one drilled well which serves 3500+ people and livestock and requires a 2–5-mile walk each day to collect water. This manually operated well serving 200 children has run dry and needs to be replaced SOLUTION: Drill 4 Water Wells (Bore Holes) 1 well = $20k Having a sustainable water solution in the community will:   Encourage  children to return to and remain in school through a school and community feeding program thereby reducing the rates of early marriage, teen pregnancy and creating a healthier community for everyone.   Enable  the pastoral community to water their animals and to plant and maintain trees, vegetable and fruit gardens. Enhance  the community's ability to respond and prevent waterborne diseases like cholera and improve general sanitation and health conditions.

The purpose of  Joliet Youth for Malawi:   Access Brings Change , a  donor-advised fund  at KBFUS, is to enhance the lives of people in Malawi, Africa. Partnering with Mary Mudron, our purpose is to bring access to water by creating borehole wells for hundreds of people in rural Malawi, Africa.  Through our friends, Fr. Elizeo Nthalika and Fr. Benedict Zele, we have identified two villages where our help is strongly needed.  Our goal is to start with the Chisawani and Chazemba villages and then move forward with others to provide essential positive changes in the lives of many. Currently, multiple villages with over 600 families share one borehole well.  Hundreds of people travel several hours and many miles to obtain water for their daily necessities.  Sadly, on many days, after walking this long distance these individuals find the well is dry with no available water.   Since 2017 our organization has raised funds to assist with providing clothing, electricity, water supply, books, and with the building of a school.  Currently, our focus is set on creating these two wells in the Chisawani and Chazemba villages which will each cost $5,000. All proceeds will go directly toward the needs of Malawi, Africa. We also advocate for systemic change within the Criminal Justice System. Our work begins inside prison, in the last 5 years, with our friends and partners, our outreach programs in and out of prison have impacted 4000 women by providing them with dignity packs and attitudinal and behavioural change training. The dignity packs have provided the dignity, respect, and self-esteem the women need. We are bridging the gap between prison and the community and ensuring we avoid the gaping trench in-between while putting the formerly imprisoned woman at the core of the strategic framework, program design, development, and implementation with progressive touch points with her children, family, and community. Clean Start supports successful reintegration and transition for women through  employment training, psycho-social support, entrepreneurship, and vocational training, enabling them to find sustainable livelihoods post-release.  We are a bridge for women leaving prison over stigma, isolation, pain and outrage, abandonment, depression, illness, and lack of economic and educational opportunities. We amplify the stories of resilience, hope, and change for formerly imprisoned women to support policy change and prison reforms. Ranyaka has been journeying with the community of Chicago for the past 3 years - understanding local challenges, identifying strengths in the midst of this marginalised community, and mobilising and equipping project teams to be the drivers of change in their area. in April 2022, Ranyaka hosted a 'Reimagine Chicago' event where over 400 community members shared their ideas on how to transform one street in their area. The community spoke. We listened. Extensive planning followed in collaboration with the local project team. On 9 an 10 December, volunteers will tackle a section of Springbok Street. Activities will include: 
 Painting houses and small home-based shops 
 Fixing and installing fencing 
 Installing solar lighting (crime flourishes in dark alleys)

 Call for support Fundraising in South Africa is ongoing.  As at 24 November 2022, a total of $11 000 was still needed to successfully implement this project.  Below: Community members in Chicago shared ideas on how to create a safer, cleaner, more attractive, more investor-friendly neighbourhood CHRISTMAS MEALS FOR DISPLACED FLOOD VICTIMS - $3300 Make a difference for 1 436 flood victims left homeless The floodwaters that brought devastation to South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province in April 2022 subsided seven months ago. However, hundreds of families are still dealing with the aftermath. This festive season from 9 to 11 December 2022, Ranyaka is joining forces with over 150 NGOs from the Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (INK) and Umlazi areas to serve Christmas lunches to 1 436 community members still being housed in 12 public community halls  in these areas. The Drive also marks the launch of a campaign to raise funds for Back-to-School starter stationery packs and school uniforms for children under 18 housed in these halls. 
 $8,22 will sponsor a Christmas meal and colddrinks for a family of four 
 $8,80 will sponsor a basic Back-to-School stationery kit (250 kits needed) 
 $29,37 will sponsor a bottle of gas for cooking (total of 12 bottles needed) 
 $7,64 will sponsor a pair of school shoes (250 pairs needed) 
 $15,86 will sponsor the average school uniform for one child (250 pairs needed) 
 As at 24 November 2022, a total of $3300* was  still required to successfully roll out this project.  *(This includes meals, cooking gas and stationery kits for 250 children, but excludes uniforms and shoes.) On  24 April, official reports indicated that over 17 000 households and 121 687 people had been affected by the floods. By end November 2022, hundreds of displaced families are still being housed in community halls. Living conditions are difficult. There is no privacy. Many halls struggle with food shortages. CO-CREATING SOLUTIONS Ranyaka tackles complex socio-economic challenges and works hand-in-hand with local communities, stakeholders across multiple sectors, faith-based institutions, academic institutions, funders and all levels of government to: 
 Employ a cost-effective  model  to identify challenges, opportunities and resources within an area 
 Develop plans to address these challenges, unlock opportunities and activate change agents & communities to self-organize 
 Facilitate multi-sectoral collaboration and interventions 
 Build cohesion and strong local networks 
 Create lean impact opportunities for communities, corporates & other funders; and 
 Implement programs & projects that achieve collective impact, as opposed to isolated impact. 
 Ranyaka's work and approach is based on a sound theoretical and tested  development framework , strong analytical tools, skills across a number of disciplines and sectors and care and concern for the communities with whom they collaborate. PROUD OF MY TOWN PROGRAMME Ranyaka is currently implementing a national socio-economic transformation initiative known as  Proud of my Town  for one of South Africa's largest banks.
